The landmark Regent Theatre holds a key part in our city’s history since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929.

Having survived a fire, a flood, twenty years in darkness and many threats of demolition to turn the magnificent theatre into a car park or tabaret venue, the Regent Theatre was re-opened in August 1996 by Marriner Theatres, meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.

Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever with seating for up to 1,794 patrons over two levels. It is one of the most magnificent auditoriums in the country, complete with bespoke original features, spectacular chandeliers, luxurious seating with plenty of leg room and a beautiful proscenium.

After three years in the planning and eight months in construction, the Regent Theatre underwent a significant refurbishment in 2019. The restoration included an increased capacity allowing for flexible seating configurations, new seats including new leather lounge chairs in the Dress Circle, upgrading of the bars and foyers, extensive repair and restoration of the ornate plasterwork and the grand and glittering crystal chandelier in the auditorium.

It continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions including Disney’s The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Sunset Boulevard, Wicked, Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical, the world premiere of King Kong and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, Hairspray, and Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

We hope you will be able to join us for a show at the Regent Theatre soon.
